Quickstart Installing Yellowbrick on AWS
Deploy the Yellowbrick SQL data platform in your AWS environment in four straightforward steps. This process gives you a fully functioning Yellowbrick instance while maintaining complete control over your data.
Prerequisites
- AWS account with permissions to create CloudFormation stacks, EC2 instances, and VPC resources
- AWS service quota that allows for at least 46 running On-Demand Standard instances (A, C, D, H, I, M, R, T, Z instance families)
- Internet-accessible VPC for deployer setup
- Access to AWS Management Console or AWS CLI

1
Setup Yellowbrick Deployer
The Yellowbrick Deployer is launched using an AWS CloudFormation template that sets up the necessary infrastructure.
- Access AWS CloudFormation in your console
- Create a new stack using the Yellowbrick template URL
- Configure parameters including stack name, VPC, subnet, and IP access restrictions
- Once creation completes (5-10 minutes), locate the Deployer URL in the Outputs tab
2
Deploy a new Yellowbrick Instance
Configure and run the deployer to create your Yellowbrick instance.
- Access the Deployer URL from the CloudFormation outputs
- Select “Install” option and accept the EULA
- Configure your instance name, deployment region, network access, and subnet settings
- Set up admin credentials (store securely – they’re only shown once)
- Configure S3 storage for your Yellowbrick instance
- Review and start installation (approximately 20 minutes)
- Access Yellowbrick Manager using the URL provided upon completion
3
Install your license
Activate your Yellowbrick instance to enable cluster creation and query execution.
- Navigate to Configuration → License in the Yellowbrick Manager
- Paste your license key and click Install License
- Verify license details including expiration date and vCPU allotment
4
Create a compute cluster
Set up a compute cluster to start running queries and analyzing data.
- Navigate to Instance Management in the left menu
- Click Create Cluster
- Configure your cluster:
- Provide a meaningful name
- Select node size (start small and scale as needed)
- Choose the number of nodes (1-2 recommended initially)
- Click Create and wait for provisioning to complete
- Once status shows “Running,” your Yellowbrick instance is ready
- Connection details are available on the Instance Management page
